Last weekend, La Guancha, Ponce saw their first obstacle race. The event was called Elite Challenge and offered 16 obstacles and challenges within a 2 mile course on the beach and nearby dunes. In typical Puerto Rican fashion, the race started a little bit late and offered a “calentamiento” or warm up routine to all their participants. Once everyone was warmed-up and ready to embrace the tropical heat, the elite wave headed out in a time trial setup. What is that you might ask? They would release participants three at the time until all 30 elite participants where off. In a short 2 mile course, the directors felt the need to do this to prevent elites to funnel up at the obstacles. Although it take away from the typical intense race start, it worked well and all elite ran comfortable and without any obstacle delays. I joined Luxury Cardio Fitness group on the open wave. The open wave consisted of about 100 participants. We insisted on being let off all at once because the time trial start really did not seemed attractive to us. We just wanted to run the course and get our medal, t-shirt and have pina coladas at the nearby boardwalk. The staff was happy to let us go all at once and off we went. As we ran through the beautiful coastline of southern Puerto Rico , we encounter our first obstacle, a low crawl in hot soft sand. This was followed by a mile run on the beach, half of it which included a sand bag carry. Beyond this sand bag carry, we had obstacle after obstacle for the next mile. But before we had fun on these obstacles, we had to go through the burpee zone. It shows how Spartan Race has influence in obstacle racing in countries where SPartan Race has never been to. Everyone had to do burpees, and there were plenty of volunteers making sure that people did them. Beyond that point, we exit the beach, and ran dune trails. There, we encountered lots of walls, monkey bars, another low crawl, and tire flips. I will let the pictures talk for themselves. Overall, a nice course for a beginner obstacle racer and I look forward to visit La Guancha for their next Obstacle Race.
