Pristine beaches, surfing contests, palm trees, loose chickens and iguanas! That is the best description I can come up with for the small town of Rincon, located in the western corner of Puerto Rico. This year, in addition to a popular surfing contest, one of the big three obstacle races of the island was held in the Cowboys Ranch. This location reminds you of the typical Spartan Race venues that include hills, hills, mountains, hills and more mountains. The course was a 3 mile course that meandered through what seemed like a ski resort, a cow pasture and bull riding arena. You see, Cowboys Cantina and Outside Grill is a local favorite and tourist attraction that serves the best steaks in the area as well as the most exotic concoctions of tropical fruit drinks including passion fruit and mango mojitos. Near the restaurant, you can see a bull riding ring surrounded by goats, horses, cows and yes, bulls! That is the setting for the spring 2017 Survivor Race.
Survivor Race is known to have one of the best events of the island. Previously, they opted for flat terrain and tougher obstacles. This time around, they punished their participant with a well rounded group of obstacles, plenty of hill climbs and, oh yeah , a log carry comparable to some Spartan Races. Obstacles included, a variety of traverse, monkey bars, walls, rope climbs, quarter pipe and the MAZE. Created by Luxury Cardio Fitness, the maze was a crawl were the difference between going right or left meant winning or loosing the race.
The event included elite, open and team divisions. You may find the results of the event here. Survivor Race will be back on September 3rd, 2017. Also I should point out that the organizers also have several events throughout the year. These are: 5k Bootcamp on May 28th, OCR Camp on August 20th, Beerfest 5k in July 30th, Beach Challenge 5k in December 13th.
