Event overview
The MCRD San Diego Boot Camp Challenge is a festival and a 3-mile race held at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, 3800 Chosin Ave, San Diego, CA. The course uses the Marine Corps recruit training area and includes obstacles such as tunnel crawls, log hurdles, a 6-foot climbing wall, and cargo net crawls. More than 60 Marine Corps Drill Instructors are positioned along the course. The event coincides with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps; participants aged 18 and older have a chance to win a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and riding lessons from the event sponsor. Admission to the festival is free for spectators. Festival activities include a beer garden, live music, vendor booths, K-9 demonstrations, static displays, camouflage face painting, and interactive games.
Race format and logistics
The event offers individual and 3-person team entries, including categories for youth, adults, active duty military, corporate, and ROTC teams. Individual age groups are defined from 14-17 up to 80 and above. Awards are given to the top three finishers in each individual age group and to the top three teams in each 3-person category; teams must cross the finish line together to qualify for awards and official times. Minimum age to participate is 14. Race packets and participant shirts are available at the pre-registered tent on event day; packets are not mailed and there is no race day registration. Registration must be completed by October 15, 2025. Transfers and substitutions are allowed before September 26, 2025. Amenities include two water stations, medical staff and tenting, portable restrooms, and a free bag check. Parking and tram support are provided for Gate 5; DoD personnel use Gate 4 parking.
