Event overview
RISE: Thermopylae is an endurance event held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, near Raphine, VA at the base of the Allegheny Mountains bordering George Washington National Forest. The event uses over 160 acres of rugged backcountry terrain that includes single-track, water crossings, mud, and steep elevations. It combines extended physical efforts with structured psychological and leadership challenges led by experienced cadre and coaches.
Distances / tiers:
- 6H - Intro tier with a marked backcountry loop and built-in obstacles.
- 12H - Extended endurance tier with additional sandbag evolutions.
- 24H - Longest tier with structured challenge zones, intensive ruck events, and memory and mental-performance tests.
Format and practical information
Participants navigate a marked loop and complete challenge zones while carrying weighted loads and performing physical tasks such as push, pull, carry, climb, crawl, and drag. The event includes ruck evolutions, leadership drills, scenario-based challenges, limited sleep (especially in 12H and 24H tiers), and post-evolution debriefs. Basic aid stations will supply water, electrolytes, and fruit; participants must bring personal nutrition and medical supplies.
Packing guidance notes a required ruck with weight plates or sandbags (example weights listed by gender), hydration, bug and sun protection, and a small journal. Packet pickup is Friday, April 17 (Charlottesville, VA) and onsite check-in is available on race day. The organizer’s refund and credit policy varies by timing and circumstance.
