Tough Oaks OCR (Obstacle Course Run)
Tough Oaks OCR is a 5k obstacle course held at Camp Albemarle in Newport, NC. The course runs across open field, woodland and shallow water and is mostly flat. It contains 20 or more strength, endurance, and agility stations placed throughout the route.
The event is run in two heats. The Elite Heat is timed and requires participants to complete obstacles or perform prescribed penalties for failures. An example penalty is a 200 foot walking lunge with no stops and 20 penalty burpees for a failed obstacle. The Open Race is untimed, offers scaling options, and allows participants to skip obstacles or perform penalties at their discretion. Families with young children participate regularly; parents are asked to run with children under 10 because some obstacles could be unsafe without adult supervision. Obstacle supervisors are positioned along the course to explain and direct at obstacles but they do not assume child safety responsibilities. Starts are staggered with families placed toward the back to reduce crowding at obstacles. EMS will be on site during the race.
A pre-race Family Night takes place the evening before on September 18, 2026 at Camp Albemarle for packet pickup, course preview, live music, yard games, food trucks, and sponsor booths. The event is timed by Run The East LLC.
