Tough Oaks OCR : basic facts
Tough Oaks OCR is an obstacle course run held on September 19, 2026, at Camp Albemarle in Newport, North Carolina (156 Albemarle Dr, Newport, NC 28570). The event is a 5k course with 20 or more strength, endurance, and agility stations. The course runs through open field, woodland, and shallow water and is described as mostly flat.
Race format, rules, and safety
The event has two separate heats: an Elite Heat (timed) and an Open Race (untimed). The Elite Heat requires competitors to run the course and complete required penalties for failed obstacles; one example penalty is completing a 200 foot walking lunge or performing 20 penalty burpees before moving on. The Open Race allows scaling of obstacles and makes obstacle completion optional; participants running with children may scale or skip obstacles. Parents are asked to run with children under 10 due to potential safety concerns. Obstacle supervisors are stationed along the course to explain and direct for each obstacle. EMS will be on site during the race.
Fees and additional activities
Published entry fees are: Elite Heat $50, Open Race $45, and children 12 and under $25. A pre-race family evening on September 18, 2026, at Camp Albemarle offers packet pickup, a course preview, live music, yard games, food trucks, and sponsor booths.
